Product Description: Movie DVD
Amazon.com: This obligatory girls' version of Stand by Me begins with actors Melanie Griffith, Rita Wilson, Demi Moore, and Rosie O'Donnell doing a lousy job of playing adult versions of the film's youthful protagonists. The idea is that this quartet of characters is having a reunion, which serves as a preface to the main story about school chums who make a pact to stay close and supportive through thick and thin. The trouble is that Griffith, Moore, Wilson, and O'Donnell look like they've rehearsed their scenes for no more than a few minutes, and after boring us silly there's little reason to get excited about anything else. Still, it's nice to have a supporting cast that includes Janeane Garofalo and Bonnie Hunt, while among the girls are three young actresses who have been burning up the road in recent years: Christina Ricci (The Opposite of Sex), Thora Birch (A Clear and Present Danger), and Gaby Hoffmann (Strike). --Tom Keogh

There were so many problems with the whole "mystery" and the scenes surrounding that, that I'm really surprised at all the 5-star reviews. For instance, didn't anybody think it was ludicrous that grandma Cloris Leachman agreed to see the four girls when she knew she had an appointment and five minutes (or less) later, she was already late? And then she didn't tell them what they were burning to know because "it took me too long to get over the trauma of it", or something like that. Not to spoil ... Read More

Now and Then is a coming-of-age tale following the lives of four pre-teen girls. This film mostly takes place in the past rather than the present, this film should've been called Then and Now. Christina Ricci and Gaby Hoffman have the best character development and depth. Demi Moore is the only adult character that seems affected by past hurts and trials from her childhood. Melanie Griffith continues to play the bimbo, she is so much smarter than that! Good film but not a home run.
