Long recognized as role-playing games par excellence, the Final Fantasy series gets a technological makeover in this installment (and series debut on the PlayStation). Shedding the two-dimensional graphics and limited sound capabilities of its predecessors, Final Fantasy VII features lush 3-D graphics, beautifully animated "movie" sequences, and soundtrack-quality music. Coupled with the game's intricate storyline, endearing characters, and immense yet highly imaginative world, these new advancements make for a quite an engrossing experience.
The story of Final Fantasy VII centers around a solider named Cloud Strife, who joins forces with Avalanche, a group of resistance fighters, to take down an evil mega-corporation known as Shinra. (The fate of the world hangs in the balance, of course.) Truly epic in scope, this four-disc game requires a considerable amount of time to complete---this reviewer gladly gave up over 80 hours of his life to finish it. But it's definitely a rewarding adventure that every PlayStation owner should consider undertaking, especially since it's now one of the low-priced "Greatest Hits" titles. --Joe Hon

So some people claim that fanboys play this. That the only reason it is better than ff6 is better graphics. I bought this game ten years after its release, and i have played many modern games. I played the kingom hearts games before this. Graphics have nothing to do with this. Those that say that its good simply choose the games they are familiar with over the new games. Let me preface this by saying I am not a fan of role-playing games. But from the first time I saw my friend playing this game, I was hooked. The battles, though turn-based, are incredibly exciting. The gameplay is so deep that you could easily play this game multiple times with different strategies and still succeed. But the best part of the game is the story. I am a huge RPG fan and have played all of the Final Fantasy games, and FFVII (7) is the worst. The graphics are TERRIBLE, the story is long and boring, and the music (aside from the battle theme) is nothing special. I know it is often considered to be the best FF, but I just cannot see why other than it being the first FF for Playstation and thus the first one most FF fans played. I suggest skipping this one and playing FFIX FFX and FFXII (9 10 and 12) first.

I own Final Fantasy VII-X and this is by far the most overrated game in the entire series. My sister told me she bought this game at a vintage store for $60 and I rushed onto Amazon.com to see if she could have gotten it cheaper. I was absolutely appalled. Don't by into the hype. This is a good game, but it is NOT in ANY way worth the price of buying it on this site. Go buy it at a garage sale for $10 or borrow it from a friend for a month or so.
