Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - no peter, plenty tork
although pete aint around..there is a strong showing by each other member. A man w/o a dream is my fave on this tight post-fame Monkees comp.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - "In a year or maybe two, we'll be gone and someone new will take our place."
Instant Replay marked a big change for The Monkees. Peter Tork was gone and their teeny bopper appeal was in steady rapid decline. I got this album on the original Colgems vinyl when I was a kid back in the early '80s. As a big fan of Mike, I was happy to see him well-featured on the back cover (the only Monkee who is in five photos rather than four). I also really liked his track "I Won't Be The Same Without Her." It was love at first listen and I remember running to a friend's house to play ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Brand Name versus Band Members
With the TV series cancelled and an overall disillusionment (awakening?) on the pop culture industry, the now trio - Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith - tried to light a magical spark to kick-start their flagging career....and came very close in accomplishing this tough task in this February 1969 release.

This is a mixed bag, with some of the tracks sitting in a vault since 1966 and others being of newer vintage. The first single selected from the album - Tear Drop City - was ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - There'll be another song.
This Monkees album was released in February, 1969. It was the first album released after Peter Tork left the group. It is a hodgepodge of material from various recording sessions. Some of the tracks date all the way back to 1966, being leftovers from their second album. Surprisingly, the album is actually pretty good. Most of the songs are good, and there aren't any truly bad songs here. I particularly like "Through the Looking Glass", "I Won't Be the Same Without Her", "Me Without You", "You ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Nesmith Saves it!
"Instant Replay" was the first Monkees album as a 3-piece. Peter Tork had left shortly before in frustration that the group still was not given very much influence on their music and records.

The group's popularity in general was also waning at this point, and there would be no more top 20 hit-singles.

Since their two fine 1967 albums, they had not really worked as a band on their recordings. It was more or less 4 solo artists working on the same overall concept.
