Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: Anthony Minghella's Oscar-winning realization of Michael Ondaatje's intricate romance deservedly earned comparisons to David Lean's sweeping screen epics derived from strong literary sources. Like Lean, Minghella sought an equally thoughtful, yet ravishing musical counterpart that fleshes out a sympathetic orchestral score with allusions to the story's cultural milieu. The equation begins with Gabriel Yared's tender, brooding symphonic score, which mingles the film's poles of fate and passion with subtlety and restraint, then adds the exotic, mesmerizing voice of Marta Sebestyen (best known for her work with Muzsikas, the brilliant Hungarian folk revivalists, who also appear here), whose presence provides a literate clue to the title character's true identity. The film's '40s time-frame gains resonance and dramatic irony by pop songs from that era, including Benny Goodman swing classics and two versions of Irving Berlin's "Cheek to Cheek" (by Fred Astaire and Ella Fitzgerald, respectively). Add a pivotal Bach cue and this is a film package that works even if you don't know the film--and that much more powerfully if you do. --Sam Sutherland

I have no idea why this won the academy award. Maybe it was because of the weak competition that year. I saw the movie and enjoyed it and the music went well with the movie but this soundtrack on its own is eminently forgettable. The high points are the tracks by Fred Astaire, Ella and Benny Goodman.

It's incredible to notice Gabriel Yared's classically musical instincts in this work. Yared's composition for "The English Patient" excels at being dramatically powerful and attractive without reaching melodrama. It's supposed to be for a tragic drama, and the music conveys that perfectly. The theme for the main character played by Ralph Fiennes in the movie portrays his tragedy, but restraint is shown so you won't have to cry for the guy. For the beautiful balance, you have a track like 'Convento ... Read More

If you were captivated by The English Patient, you will not be disappointed with this soundtrack. Some of the vocal tracks by Ella F. and Fred A. are an interesting addition, but by no means should be a turn off.
The jewel case insert also contains a few photos from the movie's scenes, and an explanation of the soundtrack itself.
I was consumed(and still am) by the absolute beauty of this film, and the passion between Fiennes and Scott-Thomas. Just close your eyes, and this soundtrack ... Read More

The movie is incredible, that's for sure...
And the music!!! Go Gabby! :) A great lebanese composer who composed scores for movies such as sylvia, message in a bottle, idole etc...
The English Patient score is inspired by Bach, and that makes it a high standard score.
This is THE Movie soundtrack to add to your collection!
