Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: The show that first defined the Broadway musical has never come to the screen intact, despite three tries. But take this splashy 1951 MGM extravaganza on its own terms, and it boggles the eyes. Not to mention the ears: The Kern-Hammerstein score includes some staples of the American songbook, such as "Make Believe," "After the Ball," and "Can't Help Lovin' That Man." Perhaps a riverboat gambler is almost too-easy casting for Howard Keel, and Kathryn Grayson is overly twittery, which may be why the film's middle sags when they take center stage. But any time the uncannily beautiful Ava Gardner smolders, a lush tragic undertone takes over (even if the most interesting parts of her story seem to take place offscreen). The physical production is extraordinary: the busy riverside setting, the outrageous color design, and best of all an "Old Man River" (sung by William Warfield) staged in the mists of morning. -- Robert Horton

I bought the DVD after wearing out my VHS tape - that's how much I enjoy this classic musical. Filled with great music and dancing. It's really fun to take a ride on the "Cotton Blossom" and watch Magnolia and Gaylord's love story as it plays out.
Great cast in a great story.

Showboats used to ply the Mississippi, and the local theater guild in Vicksburg used to give performances aboard the Sprague before it was destroyed in a fire. Melodramas were common.
People can argue about the various versions of Showboat (the original musical goes back a ways in time), but this 1951 version was produced when technology had features not available earlier. It has stars of yesteryear including Ava Gardner and Kathryn Grayson. Various songs from the musical have withstood ... Read More

This is my favorite production of "Showboat." The cast mix is remarkable in making their characters genuine real people, likeable or despicable. The music is memorable, and the dancing entertaining.

I first saw this flick when I was 11 years young. It was my first musical, and now, being a little older I have been thinking back to yester year. To me it is a great musical...

"Show Boat" has been one of my favorite musicals for most of my life. I thank my parents for exposing me to this and other great musical theater productions.
The DVD reproduction of this movie is perfect and I love it. I had the pleasure of sharing it with my grandchildren a few weeks ago and they liked it as well.
Thank you so much for bringing this great classic to DVD.
