Product Description: Staying sane sometimes means embracing insanity—especially in nursing!
What's it like to be a male nurse in a woman-dominated profession? For Richard Steele it means incompetent administrators, drug addicted doctors, a whacked-out nursing staff, long grueling hours, and bizarre patients. Confessions of a Male Nurse takes you on a rollercoaster ride through the on and off duty life of a gay male nurse in the early 1980s before AIDS became omnipresent. This hilarious, often touching dark comic novel starts with our irreverent, anti-establishment hero's training and moves on through some of the wackiest—and shocking—adventures you've ever read.
Confessions of a Male Nurse tells the uncensored story of a gay man who wants to make a difference with his life—by helping those in need. From his tortuous schooling through being on staff at a hospital, this tale takes you on his adventures from the pediatric ward to the psych ward to the Intensive Care Unit—and the screwball staff and friends he meets.
Get the whole torrid story!

Enjoyed this thoroughly. Very clever, funny dialogue throughout, and a wide-eyed sense that all of these bizarre things actually happened, that no one could make this stuff up. Just another reason, were one needed, to stay out of the hospital. Negatives: the book's catch phrase is repeated 'way too often, and I found the twist at the end (I knew there had to be one and was waiting for it) distinctly unpleasant. But these are minor quibbles and should deter no one.

I've had the unfortunate experience to have to be admitted to the emergency room of my local hospital several times and this book gives the reader a wonderful insight into just what the emergency or ICU nurse goes thru. I could tell that the gay nurses not only had a ball doing what they were doing they were incredibly professional and extraordinarily skilled at what they do. In fact on more than one occassion they saved my life. Thanks guys. (Plus without exception they were the cutest things.) ... Read More

Ferri, Richard S. "Confessions of a Male Nurse", The Haworth Press, 2005.

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride
We hear so much of what happens in the medical profession but you have not heard anything until you read Richard Ferri's "Confessions of a Male Nurse". Ferri puts the truth out there--every outrage, every observation and every appointment in this very funny look at the nursing profession. We learn what it is like to be a male in a profession ... I'll hand it to the cover designer for hoodwinking people into buying this utterly useless and predictably gay "book." The romance aspect - predictable, the gay aspect - predictable, the nursing aspect . . you get the picture. Terribly written and clearly used for this "writer's" ego boosting. He doesn't make it past page 20 when he HAS to mention the size of his penis - in the context of telling another syrupy "had to have been there" story, of course. Can it get any more gay than that? Why not just take ... Read More

Perhaps the book should have been titled, "Chicken or Feathers". A line the author uses quite often throughout the book. The author could have just reapeated the phrase over and over for a page or two solid. This "novel" reads like low quality soap opera crap. I'm gay, I'm male, and I'm a RN; I was expecting something more organic, true to life. This story so did not deliver. There were often typographical errors in the text which helped to contribute to the overall sophomoric effect of the writing. This book ... Read More
