Product Description:
The Taurus Reach: a remote interstellar expanse that holds a very old and potentially cataclysmic secret, the truth of which is feared by the Tholians, coveted by the Klingons, and dubiously guarded by the Federation. At the center of this intrigue is Vanguard, a Federation starbase populated by an eclectic mix of Starfleet officers and civilians, whose lives are forever altered as they explore the layers of mystery surrounding the Reach and steadily peel them away...one after another.

In the aftermath of Harbinger, Commodore Diego Reyes commands Vanguard while waging an intensely personal struggle, tasked to uncover the true significance of the Taurus Reach while simultaneously concealing that mission from his fellow officers -- and even his closest friends. As the Daedalus-class U.S.S. Lovell brings some of Starfleet's keenest technical minds to help, the U.S.S. Endeavour makes a find that could shed further light on the enigmatic meta-genome that has captured the Federation's interest -- if its crew survives the discovery....

Deep within the Taurus Reach, an ancient and powerful alien mind has awakened prematurely from aeons of hibernation, alerted to the upstart civilizations now daring to encroach upon the worlds in her care. With the stakes for all sides escalating rapidly, the alien lashes out with deadly force against the interlopers, propelling the Vanguard crew on a desperate race to understand the nature of the attacker, and to prevent the Taurus Reach from becoming a war zone.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - not as good as the first
It went rather slow in parts, but has its moments. We see the potential of a major inter-stellar conflict developing... Tholians, Klingons, the federation and Romulans. The one thing which I really like about the series and this installment is that it doesn't neglect the personal struggles of the characters, it really goes into main characters minds. As the series progresses, I'm eager to learn more about the individual characters and the developing conflict.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Should have been so much better
What a letdown. This, the second Vanguard book, fails to meet the high bar set by the first book, David Mack's "Harbinger". The *story* here is awesome. It's the *writing* that drags it all down. Whereas Harbinger was hard to put down, reading "Summon the Thunder" was often a chore. Not a terrible chore because of the great story, but the writing was too often something to be endured.

Firstly, it's easy to tell more than one person was at work here. One writer is serviceable. ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Painfully wordy and hard to read
I was surprised by this novel after reading the first in the Vanguard series because it is so poorly written. I'm sure Dayton Ward does good work because this novel is very detailed, but this work is overly complicated and way too wordy for even a techno-geek and very long-time Trek fiction fan such as myself. I found the references to Trek lore to be encyclopedic rather than integrated into the story, as if the authors injected facts from past situations to bolster the strength of the "embeddedness" ... Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One of the best Star Trek Series
I have to say that I didn't think I would like this series when I first bought the books. That said, this 3 book series was very entertaining and well written. I enjoyed the books so much that I have sought out others by David Mack, who wrote the first (Harbinger) and third (Reap the Whirlwind) books in the series.

Suggestion: don't read this book first. Get Harbinger. It is worth it to get to the final book, Whirlwind. You may as well get all three; they are so entertaining you'll want to ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The story line is one of the better ones
It's not as good as the first book but still is wroth reading. I've already read the 3rd one and really enjoy this story line. so I look forward to more along this avenue.
