Product Description: FROM THE USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF STAR TREK ®: A TIME TO HEAL, THE START OF A NEW EPIC IN THE ERA OF THE ORIGINAL SERIES
Returning from its historic first voyage to the edge of the galaxy, the damaged U.S.S. Enterprise journeys through the Taurus Reach, a vast and little-known region of space in which a new starbase has been unexpectedly established. Puzzled by the Federation's interest in an area so far from its borders and so near the xenophobic Tholian Assembly, Captain James T. Kirk orders the Enterprise to put in for repairs at the new space station: Starbase 47, also known as Vanguard.
As Kirk ponders the mystery of the enormous base, he begins to suspect that there is much more to Vanguard than meets the eye. It's a suspicion shared by the Tholians, the Orions, and the Klingon Empire, each of whom believes that there are less than benign motives behind the Federation's sudden and unexplained desire to explore and colonize the Taurus Reach.
But when a calamity deep within the Reach threatens to compromise Starfleet's continued presence in the region, Kirk, Spock, and several key specialists from the Enterprise must assist Vanguard's crew in investigating the cause of the disaster and containing the damage. In the process, they learn the true purpose behind the creation of Vanguard, and what the outcome of its mission may mean for life throughout that part of the galaxy.
Inside: Bonus diagrams of Vanguard station!

Back in the day of Captain Kirk and Spock, Federation scientists find something hinky on planet Ravanar IV: a sampled mold is inexplicably sporting colossal amounts of genetic material. What if this "meta-genome" is the work of an advanced alien race of incredible technological sophistication?, they wonder. Driven to learn more about the origins and meaning of this mysterious "meta-genome" but afraid to attract alien attention, the Federation attempts to hide a flurry of scientific and archaeological ... When I first heard the news of a re-launch movie I said that it didn't matter because Trek was dead. Reading this book changed my mind this story is new vibrant and alive and if the new movie has half of the narrative force as this book has we will be ok.
Overall-Go into this series with an open mind it is a good old fashioned exploration story as I have not read in a Trek book in years.

I've been a Trek fan since watching TOS reruns in the 70's. Strangely though, this is the first Star Trek novel I've ever read. The foldout diagram caught my attention, and the premise sounded promising, so I gave it a shot. Let me say "Wow!". Mack is a phenomenal author who has wrapped an engaging story around a quiver of deftly developed, intriguing characters.
The setup rings familiar: a Federation space station wedged between two hostile powers far from Federation territory graples ... Read More

I read this mainly out of curiousity. I wanted to see if it could at least match the Deep Space Nine series since I'm a fan of that series as well. It exceeded my expectations. The series is filled with compelling and interesting characters, it has a good intricate theme and I love the idea of a centralized series on a space station. It has drama, interpersonal conflicts, suspense and intrigue.
While not too much of a fan of the original old Star Trek, I've always liked Spock so it was refreashing ... Read More

I've been reading ST novels for over twenty-five years and Harbinger is a good read. It's no easy chore to steer away from characters you know so well from TOS and create new ones that will live on in ST: Vanguard but Mack did a pretty good job. My only "critique" would be that Mack consistently tries to sneak up on you and elevate your vocabulary by throwing in words and phrases (including some French references) that would have many people reaching for a dictionary. When I read a ST novel, I want to enjoy the ... Read More
