Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Reaches Into the Darkness and Touches You in the Baby
'Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?' conjures something primal and nostalgic, which for most fans, at least subconsciously, is exactly what Batman is meant to do. The tale is a well-crafted folk-lore classic, poignant and almost melancholic in nature.

It's Batman's funeral, and all of Gotham City's celebrities, both good, bad and forgotten are attending. The story itself takes place outside of DC Universe continuity, mostly because Bruce Wayne isn't dead, but Gaiman still manages ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Read Planetary's take instead
I was sooooo excited for this. My favorite writer on one of the most interesting characters ever. What Gaiman tries to do is admirable, unofrtunately it is an unfocused, muddling mess. Andy Kubert's artwork is amazing, Gaiman should not have tried to tell this tale in 2 issues. It should have easily been 4-5. A major disappointment.

If you want to see this issue executed pheonomenally, check out Planetary/Batman.

This volume collects several Batman stories written years ago by cult fave Neil Gaiman (Sandman, etc.) Some of the stories are workmanlike, others have glimmers of Gaiman's puckish, reality-warping sense of humor, particularly the title story, a two-part saga that was intended as the "end" of the original ... Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - flubbed it
the first half of the story seems to be in an incredibly stark contrast to the second half. we go from dark to sappy. i think the two-parter could have ended on a positive note without entering into the maudlin.

the art, however, is gorgeous.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Gaiman and Batman?
Gaiman is potentially one of the more iconic writers of our time, not just for his graphic novels, but his literature and even screen writings. Never would I have thought that he would take the time to cast his hand over the realm of the internationally famed Batman. Yet he did, masterfully utilizing his own style of writing to portray a story that many could find absurd. A little absurdity may have been what exactly this piece needed because each narrative only leads to further wonderment and questions. ... Read More
