Product Description: Before he came to Earth, the people of Superman's homes planet Krypton had battled Brainiac, a cold and callous alien obsessed with the control of knowledge.
Now, Brainiac has set his sights on destroying Earth and finishing off the Last Son of Krypton once and for all. This epic battle will change Superman's world forever.

Being primarily a Batman fan, I've only recently discovered the greatness of the world's first/prototypical superhero: Superman. The first Superman graphic novel I read was Superman: Birthright, an excellent and tasteful 21st Century update of the original origin story. Since then I've searched for the best of Superman (mostly modern tales) and Superman: Brainiac makes the top 5. Opening 35 years in the past on the planet Krypton just before its destruction, General Zod and the Kryptonian military ... Read More

This is Geoff Johns doing what he does best. Johns takes the basic outline of the Silver Age debut of Brainiac (Action Comics #242), decompresses it and merges it into modern DC continuity. It is a pretty good trick that he uses to good effect here.
Gray Frank does a stunning job re-imagining Brainiac by way of H.R. Geiger. His action scenes are amazing. Frank is well on his way to becoming the definitive penciller for the modern Superman. His art evokes classic Superman arts, like ... Read More

Rather uninspired presentation but an overall decent superman story. It is interesting to see a bit more of the story behind a villain such as brainiac and how he fits into the world of krypton. The story's conclusion is almost over before it begins but if you are looking for a casual read you could do worse.

Being a guy who started his comic obsession with Batman, eventually I found myself wanting to take a peek at some of the adventures that Bruce Wayne's greatest ally/rival has when he is all to his lonesome (I had only been exposed to the character in brief snippets of Batman's various sagas and through the excellent "All Star Superman") I began to hear really good things about what Geoff Johns (Writer of my favorite comic, Green Lantern) was doing with Superman so I decieded to give this a try. I soon ... Read More

I've been a comic junkie for several years and have had a on again off again relationship with The Man of Steel. While artists have always found how to portray Kal-El, writers haven't been as lucky. That is not the case with Geoff Johns! He gives us an action packed story while still maintaining the "Human Factor." Not an easy task to accomplish when your main characters in the collection are both alien. Brainiac has never been on my list of scary villians, but after this read he has cemented a spot on ...
