Product Description: Shakespeare's classic play of tragic love between members of opposing families. Genre: Feature Film-Drama Rating: PG Release Date: 12-DEC-2003 Media Type: DVD
Amazon.com: Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet was unique in its day for casting kids in the play's pivotal roles of, well, kids. Seventeen-year-old Leonard Whiting and 15-year-old Olivia Hussey play the titular pair, the Bard's star-crossed lovers who defy a running feud between their families in order to be together in love. Typically played on stage and in previous film productions by adult actors, the innocent look and rawness of Whiting and Hussey resonated at the time with a burgeoning youth movement from San Francisco to Prague. The tragic romance at the center of the story also clicked with anti-authority sentiments, but even without that, Zeffirelli scores points by validating the ideals and passions of strong-willed adolescents. Less successful are scenes requiring the actors to have a fuller grasp of the text, though the best thing going remains the unambiguous duel between Romeo and Tybalt (Michael York). Lavishly photographed by Pasquale de Santis on location in Italy, this Romeo and Juliet brought a different tone and dimension to a story that had become tiresome in reverential presentations. --Tom Keogh

I saw this movie at the end of my senior year in high school. I was pleased and relieved at how well it held up over the ensuing years. It was a Valentine treat for my sweetie and me and we enjoyed it muchly. Loved Len Whiting's butt!

This was a coming of age film for me. I have always thought it was a perfect example of true love in a time that is not so different than ours. The Old English language is a little difficult to get used to. Give this film a chance. The best version to share with young people.

Perfect story (Shakespeare), perfect directing (Zeffirelli), beautiful actors (Hussey,Whiting)..a near perfect film.
Interestingly not exactly tied to the play (Romeo does not kill Paris in the film as he does in the play). Zeffirelli had Hussey in mind all along for Juliet but Whiting had to beat out 300 other actors to get his part.

I'll leave the Shakespeare loving & bashing to that one track crowd. This is a movie on a DVD.
This is a great movie about the power of culture & family trampling young love & devotion. The spoken language may be hard to follow but it is not impossible & is well worth the trouble. You must concentrate throughout this show. No one will "get it" if brain dead. Use more energy and listen.
The story line is simple & easy to follow you never wonder why someone dislikes ... Read More

This is without a doubt the best filmed Romeo and Juliet ever. It was a stroke of genius casting the roles of the leads with actors of approximate age of the Shakespeare characters. And did they shine. Juliet was the sun. Although that line was clipped from movie version. I believed Romeo was taken with his amour Juliet so much he would die for her. Tears were streaming down my cheeks in the last scene. The last time I had seen this movie was 1968. This was my second viewing and it is was as beautiful ... Read More
