Product Description: Eager to serve his country during World War Two, Steve Rogers was transformed into a physically perfect man by the government's Super Soldier Program. Armed with an indestructible shield and the physical prowess of an Olympic athlete, Rogers fought valiantly to uphold the ideals and principles of democracy until frozen in a block of ice where he was preserved for decades. Discovered by the Avengers and revived, Steve Rogers is a man out of time, who remains vigilant in his battle to protect the innocent and uphold the American ideals of truth, justice and honor. In this fully updated re-issue of Essential Captain America Volume 1, Marvel's Sentinel of Liberty renews his mission and fights the good fight, facing off against Baron Zemo, the Red Skull, Power Man, the Swordsman, Batroc the Leaper and the Super-Adaptoid! Collecting Tales of Suspense #59-99 and Captain America #100-102.

I think all of the Marvel Essentials are great. The Only thing I could wish for in the Marvel Essentials such as Captain America's is for all the volumes to be in color. Becuase they are all in black in white.

Personally I found this collection to be a great snapshot of the Silver Age and a fun romp with Cap. These stories have plenty of camp and melodrama, but also a lot of heart. There are also some real classics here: plenty of Red Skull, and Captain America teaming up with the Black Panther.
I've found that some of the Essentials collections are iffy on quality where paper and printing are concerned, but this particular one seemed okay. I also think that Kirby's art, with its clean lines ... Read More

It's hard to complain about over 500 pages of comics for a little more than a ten spot...so I won't...much. I'd start with the lack of color, but that's what allows Marvel to make such a big tome for such a cheap price. I can deal with that.
I feel that as a kid I was forced into being a Captain America fan because I was a big fan of the Avengers comics. He was their leader! You can't NOT like the leader of the Avengers if you're an Avengers fan. Can you? He wasn't the coolest of the Avengers. ... Read More

America is a very different place today than it was in the '40s, or even in the '60s, so it really says a lot that Captain America is still drawing fans into the new millennium. In fact, it seems that the character has never been more popular, even though Steve Rogers is apparently dead in his own ongoing series. But as all devoted comic readers know, death never really gets in the way, right? So no big whoop - simply jump back in time to experience some of what made Cap so great. While we don't have any Essential ... Read More

These are absolutely great stories, with incredible art by Jack. There are some stories done by Gil Kane and other artists, which are all right, but the stories with Kirby's art - and plots - are fantastic. And these are stories in which Stan Lee avoided getting too melodramatic or chatty in his dialogue. Lee shows great restraint, and Kirby's action scenes are incredible.
But there are two versions of this TPB. The one with Cap coming at you, with the yellow background has absolutely HORRIBLE REPRODUCTION ... Read More
