Editorial Review:

Product Description:
THE HUMAN ADVENTURE CONTINUES.

In the aftermath of the astonishing events of Star TrekĀ®: The Motion Picture, the captain and officers of the U.S.S. Enterprise remain haunted by their encounter with the vast artificial intelligence of V'Ger...and by the sacrifice and ascension of their friend and shipmate, Willard Decker.

As James T. Kirk, Spock, and Leonard McCoy attempt to cope with the personal fallout of that ordeal, a chapter from their mutual past is reopened, raising troubling new questions about the relationship among God, Man, and AI. On the recently settled world of Daran IV, the former refugees of the Fabrini worldship Yonada are being divided by conflicting ideologies, as those clinging to their theocratic past vie with visionaries of a future governed by reason alone.

Now, echoes of the V'Ger encounter reverberate among the Enterprise officers who years ago overthrew the Oracle, the machine-god that controlled Yonada. Confronting the consequences of those actions, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy also face choices that will decide the fate of a civilization, and which may change them forever.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Mixed bag for various reasons
I want to start this review off by stating that I am a trek fan, but not one of those impossible-to-please trekkers who actually hate everything trek. This novel was a good idea that just wasn't executed well. It has been stated in other reviews that the characterizations are bad, and this is partially true. While the characters of Kirk, Spock, and even McCoy seem slightly "off," Bennett does give a reasonable explanation for this (fallout from the V'Ger incident and other past experiences). This ...

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Nice try for a first attempt
Evidently, this is the author's first novel. It reads like a decent first attempt. He over-reaches for too many ties to figures and references from TOS, Star Trek the Movie, and ENT. However, the essential plot expanding an episode from TOS is fairly solid. Readable TOS book but hopefully the author will do better next time.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A Satisfying Return to the Motion Picture Era
It has been some time since a Star Trek novel came out that was set in that great lost era that lies between the events of Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn. In "Ex Machina", author Christopher L. Bennett takes us into a tale that he's "wanted to tell since the days when writing Star Trek fiction was only a remote fantasy." Bennett's first novel-length contribution to the Star Trek universe certainly bespeaks of an imagination filled with a depth of imagery that isn't ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - The most irritating and warped interpretation of the Trek Characters
This novel was quite possibly one of the worst Trek novels I've ever read. The author has infected the characters that we've known for forty years with personality characteristics, flaws and dialogue that would simply never come out of their mouths or personalities. This coupled with an abominable number of annoying new alien species (one speaks by singing in poetry, and needs to be in MUD because she's from a MUD - yes, wet dirt- planet) makes for a "GET TO THE POINT, IF THERE IS ONE!" read. I never ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best Star Trek novel I've read in a long, long time
Christopher Bennett's "Ex Machina (Star Trek: The Original Series)" is quite simply the best Star Trek novel I've come across in a long, long time. Not only is it a superb sequel to both "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and the series episode "For the World is Hollow and I have touched the Sky", but it is that rarity in "Star Trek" fiction: an admirable piece of writing which rises close to what I expect from superb science fiction literature. Bennett not only excels in his world-building - creating a believable ... Read More
