Product Description: This hilarious, whip-smart collection of essays from a top writer and producer of Six Feet Under crisscrosses from the highly personal (conflating her own loss of virginity and the Kobe Bryant accusations), to the political (what she has in common with Monica and Chandra), to the outrageously Los Angelean (why women wear huge diamonds and what they must do to get them). Tiny Ladies in Shiny Pants is a genre-defying combination of personal essay and memoir, or a hilarious, unruly and unapologetic evaluation of society, religion, sex, love, and -- best of all -- Jill Soloway.
Download Description: "When Jill Soloway was just thirteen, she and her best friend donned the tightest satin pants they could find, poufed up their hair and squeezed into Candies heels, then headed to downtown Chicago in search of their one-and-only true loves forever: the members of whichever rock band was touring through town. Never mind that both girls still had braces, coke-bottle-thick glasses and had only just bought their first bras...they were fabulous, they felt beautiful, they were tiny ladies in shiny pants. Now that Jill is all grown up and a successful writer and producer, she can look back on her tiny self and share her shiny tales with fondness, absurdity and obsessive-compulsive attention to even the most embarrassing details. From the highly personal (conflating her own loss of virginity and the Kobe Bryant accusations), to the political (what she has in common with Monica and Chandra), to the outrageously Los Angelean (why women wear huge diamonds and what they must do to get them), Tiny Ladies in Shiny Pants is a genre-defying combination of personal essay and memoir, or a hilarious, unruly and unapologetic evaluation of society, religion, sex, love, and -- best of all -- Jill. Compared to Laurie Notaro's humorous books, this book is a severe disappointment. I usually have a policy: if I spend money on something, I'm going to finish it. I couldn't even make myself finish the last 50 pages. This book isn't funny...its a rant broke up by interesting chapter titles.
This author really seemed to go from one extreme to the next. One minute she's proud of being Jewish, the next minute she's stating that she's really not that Jewish...One minute she's proud to be ... Read More

I think the only reason I finished this book was because I had nothing else to read at the time. This is the memoir of a spoiled, rich girl to whom things have come easily. Three cheers for her, just kind of boring for the reader.

this novel was not all the entertainment weekly promised it to be. and usually they are pretty reliable. this woman is touted to be up there with david sedaris and augusten burroughs, i am sorry to say that she falls well short. not to try and sound sexist, but i think that her writing style and perspective is a little out of my range. it is hard to explain why it was difficult for me to get my head around this novel. i began to wonder if all women thought and acted like this. it is so complicated ... I made it to the sixth chapter. I didn't stop because I love dogs; I stopped because I couldn't stand to waste any more of my time. I suppose if you want to read the memoirs of a shallow woman, obsessed with celebrities and raised in a wealthy home, this would be a great book for you. Soloway's attempt at cuteness by way of footnotes and parentheticals fell flat with me, perhaps because I disliked her so much by the time I got to those parts. I feel I was roped into thinking this book might have some good ... Read More

I came to this book because I was a fan of Six Feet Under and Soloway of course was a writer for that great show. I don't know, perhaps I expected something more like the show instead of yet another book I feel like I've read too many times before.
Here was yet another entry in the genre of post-60s, somewhat Gen-Xy books in which the author confesses humiliating personal truths, drops pop-culture references by the hundreds, and does her best to be shocking without going too far. Some doses ... Read More
