Product Description:
Twenty-five years ago, Captain Jean-Luc Picard conducted breakthrough negotiations with an aggressive race called the Gorn. Now, on the anniversary of that achievement, Captain Picard and the U.S.S. Enterprise⢠are headed for the Gorn Homeworld to continue that important work.
But when the ship stops to investigate a mysterious alien artifact, Captain Picard is suddenly hurled through time and space. Just as Commander Riker and the Starship Enterprise⢠crew begin an impossible search for their captain, the Gorn summit goes terribly wrong.
As war looms over the galaxy and Picard is desperately needed on the Gorn Homeworld, the captain finds himself stranded in the past on a planet called Cestus III at a crucial turning point in Federation history. Now, caught in a deadly situation that challenges Picard's most cherished beliefs, he must weigh the fate of a world against the future of the entire Federation...

I picked this oldie up because of the time travel theme. In it Picard, while enroute to critical negotiations with the Gorn (ref TOS episode `Arena'), is hurled by an ancient artifact they find floating in space back to Cestus III just days before the outpost is attacked. While there, he struggles with his mandate not to alter the timeline and his feelings about the eminent massacre of the colonists.
This is one of Michael Jan Friedman's MANY novels and reads just fine, but a couple ... Read More

Marvellous story idea, wonderfully executed. The characterizations are handled exquistitely, the pacing is superb, one of the best of the Star Trek Novels.
One quibble: the word you're looking for on page 184 is "genteel", not "gentile".

Although this exceptional numbered novel is today considered to be one of the early "Stargazer" novels, it is most definitely considered one of the best novels written to date by Star Trek's most prolific author Michael Jan Friedman and former Star Trek editor, Kevin Ryan. Few of the numbered novels can even compare to this fast paced, "historically" rich Star Trek novel. This novel is a pure sign of MJ Friedman's "true" genius and one of the reasons why he is Star Trek's most prolific author; he ... Read More

Star Trek: The Next Generation, Requiem by Michael Jan Friedman and Kevin Ryan is a classic. Where could you get Captain Picard, everyones favorite gnarley lizards (Gorn), time travel, interplanetary war, and camios by Kirk, Spock, and McCoy... only in this book.
This book starts out on the U.S.S. Stargazer Captain Jean-Luc Picard's first command, twenty-five years prior to his command of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Picard works on negotiations with the Gorn, but as we know the Gorn are sneaky ... Read More

I had so much fun reading this and many other Star Trek books in High School. Particularly good are books that elaborate on the more mediocre average Star Trek episodes. This book is one of them. It elaborates on the episode Arena, the first and only time we ever saw the Gorn in Star Trek. Time travel, another fun Sci Fi idea is also a part of this book. Seeing (in my imagination) Picard going back in time to the Original Star Trek is better than watching the DS9 episode Trials and Tribbilations (A ... Read More
