Amazon.com Review: In this prequel to McMurtry's 1986 Pulitzer Prize-winning Lonesome Dove, Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call are invincible young bucks, Texas Rangers, full of youthful energy and, quite frankly, full of themselves. That is until they're utterly consumed by the vicious battlefield of the early-19th-century Wild West. Their journey takes them across barren deserts and raging rivers and through steep and snowy mountains, often on foot and with barely enough provisions and clothing to keep them from certain death. The constant threat of attack by Comanches keeps them awake nights, fearing for their lives--and for good reason. "Buffalo Hump reached down and grabbed the terrified boy by his long black hair. He yanked his horse to a stop, lifted Zeke Moody off his feet, and slashed at his head with a knife, just above the boy's ears. Then he whirled and raced across the front of the huddled Rangers, dragging Zeke by the hair. As the horse increased its speed, the scalp tore loose and Zeke fell free. Buffalo Hump had whirled again, and held aloft the bloody scalp."
This bedraggled group of adventurers--on their foolhardy expedition to seize Santa Fe from the Mexicans (who also prove to be formidable enemies)--includes a salty assortment of cowboys, scouts, fortune seekers, and a fat and sassy whore nicknamed "The Great Western." McMurtry's adept storytelling paints a portrait of the Wild West that at times is palpable. One can almost smell the campfires, the body odors, and the long-awaited piece of meat after weeks without a proper meal. Dead Man's Walk will satisfy your craving for adventure, without having to put your life on the line.
Product Description: In Streets of Laredo, McMurtry brought the story ahead, giving us Call in his old age. Now, in Dead Man's Walk, he takes us back to the days when Gus and Call were young Texas Rangers, first experiencing the wild frontier that will form their characters. We also meet Clara Forsythe, the unforgettable young woman whose effect on Gus McCrae is immediate and unshakable. Danger, sacrifice, comradeship, and love give them the strength and courage to survive against the almost insurmountable odds of the frontier.
In Dead Man's Walk, Gus and Call are not yet twenty, young men coming of age in the days when Texas was still an independent republic. Enlisting as Texas Rangers under a land pirate who wants to seize Santa Fe from the Mexicans, Gus and Call experience their first great adventure in the barren great plains landscape, in which arbitrary violence is the rule -- whether from nature, or from the Indians whose territory they must cross in order to reach New Mexico.
From the Indians defending their land with unrelenting savagery, to the Texans attempting to seize and "civilize" it, and the Mexicans threatened by both, the reckless men of the untamed frontier make this at once a riveting adventure story and a powerful work of literature.

I am a fan of McMurtry's Lonesome Dove. I was so entranced by the quality of the first book, that I sought out the sequels. Streets of Laredo, still had the old blush. By this time, Dead Man's Walk, McMurtry is quite worn out. His book spends no time on character but only on action, action that is contrived, unworthy of the qualities that earned his Pulitzer Prize.
One scrape follows after another, and they miraculously survive, only because the author knows they must, to be alive ... Read More

This book is briliant in its non-traditional form. It has a story line, but not a typical plot development as one is accustomed to. This actually serves the story's purpose very well, as the theme revolves around disorganization. The Texas Rangers and other white men on the adventure hunt actually go on the long journey to Santa Fe to take the town. The main characters in the story show concern that the leader to Santa Fe (Cobb) may not have a real plan on what to do, but so gripped are they by ... Read More

As stated in the title this is a review for those who have yet to read any of the Lonesome Dove novels. This is the first novel chronologically of the series and I am reading it as such. My reviews will be written with that in mind and with absolutely no comparison to Lonesome Dove, the Pulitzer Prize winning novel that is the center piece to this historic series. I have read a lot of the criticism of the books in this series that are not titled Lonesome Dove and that seems to be the biggest problem ... Read More

I am reading this book now and am in Part IV. I really enjoy it b/c it keeps my attention (something a lot of books don't do for me). The encounters of Gus and Call are fitting, and this is a good story about their years before they take on LONESOME DOVE, probably the best example of western writing yet to date.

What a great way to start. I love the background on the characters I fell in love with in Lonesome Dove. Can't wait to complete the whole series.
