Product Description:
Is mind reading an invasion of privacy?
What's wrong with genetic experimentation?
How many identities can one person have?
Are the X-Men advocates of civil rightsand social change?
Do mutants have "human" rights?
X-Men is one of the most popular comic-book franchises ever, captivating millions with its teeming X-Verse of genetic mutants who have been unleashing their unique special powers in the service of both good and evil since 1963. Focusing on identity and personal conflict as much as action and adventure, this bestselling series is full of complex characters and storylines that are deeply influenced by important philosophical questions. Through philosophical greats like Aristotle, Sartre, Camus, Levinas, and others, X-Men and Philosophy shows how this remarkable series speaks not only to generations of pop culture audiences, but to the very heart of the human condition.

Housel, Wisnewski, and the rest have done a bang-up job of linking philosophy and the Marvel comic book series X-Men. I found that popular culture and philosophy books are a great way to get into philosophy, which is an otherwise dense (albeit eternally interesting) subject. There's lots of stuff from the comics as well as the movies, and something is brought to the table ... Read More

What does one do when you wake up without memory, or your genes have expressed a new part of themselves overnight (Wolverine, Beast)? This book asks these questions and more.
As Socrates put ... Read More

In the latest edition to the Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture series comes //X-Men and Philosophy//. This is a collection of essays on different philosophical and moral questions raised by the popular comic series and now popular movies. Subjects range from the ethics of mind reading to the relationship between the mutants in Marvel's comic book world and the Jews during World War II. While it may seem to be an odd way to find thorny philosophical questions, the many essayists really dig into the ... Read More

I teach courses in a university in science fiction, fantasy, and soon will be offering a class in the comic book in American culture. Part of that teaching task is finding books to supplement the primary texts students read; and yes, I plan on having them read a number of different types of comic books/graphic novels; as well as works such as Understanding Comics and Our Gods Wear Spandex:The Secret History of Comic Book Heroes, but students also need sources that are not solely focused on textual/literary ...
