I just had to say something about the other two reviews for this book. This hardback version is the original and does have illustrations and very beautiful ones at that. The reviewer that said there were no illustrations was mistaken and most likely meant the paper-back version. I am in my seventies and read this book as a child. I left a comment for the other review, but I feel so strongly that his one-star rating could possibly affect someone's decision to buy this book that I had to post a review of my own. The Black Stallion is a WONDERFUL book, in fact, my all-time favorite childhood book, even over the old classic, Black Beauty (which is way too depressing for children, in my opinion). I orginally ordered what was depicted and described as a beautifully illustrated large book as a gift for a six year old boy. What I received through a customer service agent was this ugly, unillustrated old version. Very disappointed in Amazon.com
