Editorial Review:

Product Description:
In one of his finest achievements, Nobel Prize winner Saul Bellow presents a multifaceted portrait of a modern-day hero, a man struggling with the complexity of existence and longing for redemption.

Introduction by Philip Roth

Amazon.com Review:
A novel complex, compelling, absurd and realistic, Herzog became a classic almost as soon as it was published in 1964. In it Saul Bellow tells the tale of Moses E. Herzog, a tragically confused intellectual who suffers from the breakup of his second marriage, the general failure of his life and the specter of growing up Jewish in the middle part of the 20th century. He responds to his personal crisis by sending out a series of letters to all kinds of people. The letters in total constitute a thoughtful examination of his own life and that which has occurred around him. What emerges is not always pretty, but serves as gritty foundation for this absorbing novel.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Just okay!
I am about halfway through this, which I'm slogging through for my reading group. I would never have chosen such a one, it being a book that is thought to be "enlightening." However one must admit that Saul Bellow, as an author, has a way with words and descriptions. Herzog is an unlikeable character, neurotic, selfish, without much to recommend him. And he is the only one! I am a writer myself and have more respect for the reader than to bore him silly with a mono-character book. The descriptions ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Book of Introspection
This book is not for the fainthearted. Nor, is it for the casual reader. The book is similar to that of Crime and Punishment, The Trial, Seize the Day, and The Death of Ivan Ilyich. EXCEPT, Herzog goes much deeper into the psyche, and soul of the protagonist. It is an exceptional book.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A brilliant, gripping study of value, intellect and breakdown
This novel starts with a ferociously strong image, then moves us into the mind of Moses Herzog. Herzog is a failing professor with an unfaithful second wife, a treacherous best friend, unwritten books and theses which remind him of his failings. Also, in a bizarrely wonderful twist, we find that Herzog writes letters avidly, even compulsively. These are largely to dead people, either relatives or historical figures he has never met. Also mathematicians - he writes to Euclid and points out why his theories ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great book for the tragically self-aware
Moses Herzog is like a Woody Allen character; utterly self-conscious, Jewish, well-educated, unsure of himself, and bizarrely anxious over how - in light of his place in history and his knowledge of philosophy - he is supposed to live.

This mounting existential angst finally blows its top after his second wife leaves him. Herzog then spends the rest of the novel emerging from the sunken milieu that has become his psyche. To succeed, though, he must travel a hilarious - yet deeply intellectual ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Herzog The Pain King.
"If I am out of my mind, it's all right with me, thought Moses Herzog" (p. 3).

In his adulterous drama, Herzog (1964), Saul Bellow's (1915-2005) title character suffers an intellectual and spiritual crisis following the failure of his second marriage. He contemplates killing his ex-wife and her lover with a loaded pistol. Although Moses Herzog (whose name is drawn from a minor character in James Joyce's Ulysses) is a brilliant Jewish intellectual, he is also a failed husband, a failed father, a ... Read More
